EAST COAST INTERN

We were graced with Katherine’s presence in our studio for the last 3 weeks. She is very dedicated to say the least, all the way from the University of Delaware, she came out to sunny San Diego to visit her cousin and interned with us during her stay. See what she had to say about her time with us.

“Being an intern at this bright and friendly studio everyday for a month was a great learning experience, as well as a lot of fun. I now have a first hand perspective of what it is like to work at a graphic design studio, which is miles away from working as a student. It was a pleasure getting to know Bobby, Joey, Ryan, and Angie! They prove that creativity, professionalism, and kindness are all equally important in successfully completing projects for their clients. I also had an incredible time getting to know the city of San Diego, as it was my first time visiting California. Taking a break from the East Coast winter was a real treat. I will miss the beautiful scenery, warm weather, and hope to return in the future.”

JANUARY 33

January happens to be a busy month in the studio. On top of all the New Year dealings both Bobby and I celebrate birthdays, another excuse to eat cake!

Yesterday Joey brought in an orange liqueur masterpiece that Jessica made for me, what a treat! Everyone in the studio chipped in and got me an assortment of green tea from Teavana, pretty much my favorite. My day was rounded out with an adventurous lunch of Puerto Rican food at the Tropical Star.

Thanks to everyone at the studio for a great day!

happy birthday to me

January 2011 Bobby's Birthday
going to lunch on 1.11 was a given, but this year i added a special request—jessica’s amazing chocolate cake.
joey, our resident multimedia graphic designer is married to jessica and she is a fantastic baker, spoils us all the time with her “experiments”.
i shared with everyone at buchanan design AND managed to feed a big slice to everyone at home. the icing on this cake was reading all the facebook birthday wishes and landing a new client.
oh, and i also scored on a few more great items for the orange collection wall.
it was a very cool birthday.

HELLO 2012

Hello 2012

wow, i can’t believe how fast 2011 flew by, but i’m super excited about the many exciting things ahead in 2012.

brand strategy will stay at the core of what we do but we will continue to push our creative skills in a variety of mediums. more application design, more website design, more animated video design, and more projects that challenge us creatively. i’m optimistic that the san diego graphic design community will continue to produce work that will help improve the poor economy and continue to help shape the corporate culture.

thank you to every client we worked with in 2011—we look forward to our continued partnership in 2012! cheers, b

Live As One

Every year we try to think of a gift for our clients that is unique, or functional, or memorable, or engaging, or just plain cool.

This year we settled on a design that was created for OrangeTree a couple years back. It’s a personal favorite of mine for many reasons and felt it was a perfect message for 2011. We found a local company to make the pillows and custom embroider them with the Live As One design. Finding the right fabric was tricky but we finally found the perfect texture and color. The best part of it all is that we didn’t need to worry about anything breaking while shipping — although the fear of moisture and utility knives crossed our minds.

The response has been overwhelming and that’s good news since it will be made available for sale on orangetreeproject.com in the spring. Merry Christmas and Cheers to 2012!

‘Tis The Season Gallery

Today we put up our very first Seasonal Poster Gallery for Winter.

About a month ago we decided to start a poster gallery in our office for each new season. For each gallery each of us would interpret the season as a poster using any art medium. In addition, each person would get a color, from a seasonal palette, that they would emphasize in their poster.

For this Winter Gallery, we chose pantone 551, 3025, 877, and 731 as our palette. For those of you who are not designers, these colors equate to a Sky Blue, a Deep Teal, a Silver and a Chocolate Brown. We threw the colors in a hat and each of us drew one. Ryan took on the Sky Blue, Bobby took on the Deep Teal, I (Joey) had Silver and Angiee was left with the Chocolate Brown.

If you find yourself at our studio, be sure to take a look at the posters in person. They will only be up for a few months as the Spring Gallery is just around the corner.

Savvy Sue & Premium Paul

The video we just completed for TRU Phone made it’s debut today in front of thousands and is receiving kudos in various twitter and blog posts.

TRU is based in London with an office in North Carolina, so in addition to the tight timeline, we worked around the 3 and 8 hour time difference.

We partnered with Comunicano on the project and the concept started with a simple conversation describing the difference between a TRU traveler and a competitor service traveler. The writing team developed the script and once that was approved we put everything in motion. Voice-over talent in LA, models in the Detour studio, and Joey revving up the new computer engines. It was a fun process with little time to second guess, check it out! b

HELLOween Mixer

If you’re office is in an office building like ours, you know what it’s like when you walk by someone who looks familiar but you don’t know why. It could be on the way to the restroom, in the parking lot, or maybe at a local restaurant during lunch. Well, we decided to shake things up a bit by creating a get-to-know-you mixer. It was originally focused on networking the various talents within our building, but we knew it would be more social. We created a great visual identity for the event and placed that on flyers, posters, and eblasts. The idea was to carve a pumpkin to represent your business and bring it to the event for the contest portion. I was so impressed with the diversity and effort that everyone put in. Both Joey and Ryan produced a unique masterpiece, we decided to submit Joey’s because it had a few more bells and whistles… The ultimate winner would be determined by everyone coming to the mixer. The building owner liked the idea so much that they added a tenant appreciation component by providing great food and prizes. It turned out to be a very successful event. So who won first place….. well, Buchanan Design of course. But honestly the competition was really great. Hoping this will become an annual event! -b

1 BILLION THIRSTY

1 Billion Thirsty

The name says it all, there are billions of people around the globe who don’t have access to safe drinking water. It’s unthinkable really, but it’s true. I met the founder of the organization last year when Darcy and I attended their annual fundraiser—Water for Christmas. At that time I was unaware of just how bad things are and the devastating statistics caused by lack of water.

I left feeling helpless but enthusiastic knowing there is a group working hard to make a positive difference. So when the call came a few months later asking if OrangeTree Project, a non-profit we started, could assist with their corporate identity we jumped right in. We also created the new Water for Christmas identity that will be unveiled next week. I will attend this year’s event feeling proud of our work, but more importantly that our contribution will help strengthen the 1 Billion Thirsty brand so they can grow and help so many more people around the world.

What a surprise yesterday when we got a “thank you” package from 1BT— it was a bonsai orange tree! Sooo perfect for the office.

LAS VEGAS

So most people may find this hard to believe, but i’ve never (really) been to Vegas. I was there a couple years back for a day meeting, but I flew in and flew out without exploring any part of vegas. I stayed at the MGM Grand and apparently came in and out through the back entrance because I never saw the lions…. So when it was time to brainstorm places for our annual retreat, Vegas seemed like a good place to visit. Ryan suggested it because he heard about the Neon Sign Museum and thought it would be the perfect eye candy for a group of designers. We flew out early on Wednesday and got to Vegas before 8am. Picked up a rental car and we headed straight to the Bellagio, Joey’s suggestion for a buffet breakfast with what he called the “best” bread pudding. It was good. After that we headed over to the Gold & Silver Pawn Shop, some of you may know it as Pawn Stars the reality show. Didn’t see any of the characters, they had wrapped up filming earlier in the morning but it was still fun to walk around. Then, we hit the mother load a block down the road, this place was full of antiques and vintage junk, I mean cool stuff. I found 4 new items for the orange collection, sweet!

After that we headed to the Neon Museum, highly recommend it to any designer going to vegas. Be sure to schedule ahead. Tons of photos and tons of water, it was hot. Next stop Caesar’s palace where we stopped for a round of roulette (my first time), window shopping underground, and a stop for chocolate. Our day was topped off with dinner at Bobby Flay’s restaurant MESA Grill. By the time we arrived back at the airport we all felt like we had been in Vegas for 3 days, when in fact we had arrived early the same morning. so that means we packed a lot into a day and I enjoyed hanging out with the BD crew.
